An artistic rendering of the slope north of Wadi Mousa, within Petra's urban center, as it would have appeared during the Byzantine period.
Unlike other sites (Jerash for example), churches in Petra were not accommodated in the large public spaces and buildings of the classical period. Instead they were squeezed into domestic quarters. Perhaps because the large public zones were still used. This water color illustrates the two known free-standing churches, the Petra Church and the North Ridge Church on the top. The churches are easily distinguished by their red pitched roofs, made of clay tiles, among crowded domestic quarters with flat earthen roofs. Baking roof tiles in an arid environment was an expensive procedure, affordable only for large public buildings. Wood was a scarce material to be used as fuel in kilns.
I hope you enjoyed this. There will be one water painting in every gallery. Stay tuned! |
